Mejdani president, Nano prime minister!
Talks begin among the winners to form the Government. The first outlines are drawn, surprises are expected
Monarchy: Nanos and OSBE in conflict, Leka writes to Vranicki. T. Shehu: We accept the elections. Committees: Close the airports
The King, Berisha leaves the rope outside
The surprise of 29 June is without doubt the relatively high percentage achieved in favor of the monarchy in the referendum on the form of government, held at the same time as the elections.
The figures communicated by representatives of the Royal Court, based on reports from the branches of the Party of the Movement for Legality in various districts of the country, spoke of a clear supremacy of the supporters of the monarchy, despite the contradictory figures given by sources from several other political forces. In fact, even many foreign radio stations spoke of a strange victory for the monarchy in Albania. The high percentage in favor of the constitutional monarchy was somewhat at odds with the direction in which the votes for the political parties went. This is because both the PS, which is the winner of these elections, and the PD, not to mention other forces such as the Republicans or the Ballists, had declared themselves in favor of a parliamentary republic, something also enshrined in their programs. The fact is that the percentage in favor of the monarchy was at least ten times greater than that achieved by the Party of the Movement for Legality, which is the largest of the monarchist groupings existing in Albania. Secondly, the monarchists' surprise was also a consequence of the way the Albanian political parties, first and foremost the main ones, campaigned. They were mainly concerned with each other, with the primary aim of winning as many seats as possible in parliament; they paid no attention whatsoever to the issue of the form of the regime. Thus, it can be said that King Leka, in support of his cause, ran an uncontested campaign. It is a fact that none of the campaigning parties at any point promoted a parliamentary republic without mentioning the presidential variant, which was also ignored on the ballots for choosing the form of the regime.
Faced with such a result regarding the form of government, one might think that the King should have won more surely had the leader of the Party of the Movement for Legality, Duro...allari, not signed the pact with Berisha for the creation of the "Union for Democracy". Taking into account the southern population's aversion to Berisha, the monarch's failure in the south is linked precisely to that signature, which turns out to have been fatal for him. Berisha's propaganda also did not miss the opportunity to exploit the surprises offered by the monarchy in Sunday's elections. RTSH and pro-Berisha newspapers are publishing the statements of representatives of the Royal Court, in which they publicize figures showing the monarchy as the winner of the referendum, despite the lack of official confirmation of these results. In this regard, the tendency to accuse the socialists of being "manipulators" is striking, even though it is known that the commissions also included people from the PD and other parties. With this line of argument, there is also talk of the things for which the international community has tied gifts to Berisha, namely non-recognition of 29 June. On the other hand, by throwing nihilism against Nano and the socialists, Berisha, in an incomprehensible way, became less concerned about the loss of the p[?]r

Revolt in Tirana Prison
Weapons seized, police officers from unit 313 held hostage
Tirana - "Rebellion" in the prison of the capital. Last night in the late hours, many prisoners attacked the staff of the Tirana prison service, taking hostage two uniformed officers and seizing their automatic weapons. Forces from the Tirana Police Directorate, led by Pashk Tusha, arrived immediately at the scene and sought to restore order. There is no confirmation whether anyone was injured in the prisoners' revolt, but up until midnight it was learned that the police officers taken hostage had not yet been released. Such a revolt had not occurred in unit 313 since March of this year, when the nationwide anti-law riots began. The prisoners' rebellion last night in Tirana recalls that of August two years ago, when 20 detainees broke their handcuffs and got out into the street. It is not known whether anything similar also happened last night in the late hours of the night.
